Popular principal bids farewell after 12 years

Jul 4, 2017-IT WAS a teary farewell as students, teachers and old boys of Methodist Boys’ Secondary School, Kuala Lumpur (MBSSKL) came together to send off their second longest-serving principal Wong Chee Kheon.

The send-off ceremony was held with participation from the school’s Board of Governors, the Methodist Council, Methodist Church and MBSSKL Alumni.

A special video montage capturing Wong’s 12 years in MBSSKL was played at the event.

Students also performed dances while Wong took to the stage to belt out two songs, Seasons in the Sun and Words.

MBSSKL has been among the top 10 schools in Kuala Lumpur in the SPM examination and has produced top STPM students at national level almost every year.

In 2008, the school was awarded the Cluster School of Excellence title.

Wong also led MBSSKL to be the first government school in the country to offer the Cambrige IGCSE programme, as well as a student exchange programme with Methodist College Hong Kong since 2010.

He worked towards ensuring that facilities at MBSSKL were similar to those at private schools, with air-conditioning, LCD projectors, smart panel and computers in every classroom.

The school excelled in chess, public speaking and robotics, among other co-curricular activites.

MBSSKL Alumni Association Management Committee’s Ron Leong said Wong’s next stint as principal would be at Wasley International School.

“I have worked with him since 2010. To me, he is a role model. Wong would bend some rules and protocol to ensure the school maintained its standards,” he said.

At the end of the ceremony, Wong was escorted by the MBSSKL Boys’ Brigade band to the car that drove him away.
